Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East SNP MP, Stuart McDonald, has condemned moves by Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, to introduce massive cuts through the Welfare Reform and Work Bill and regulations on tax credits.

An estimated 6,700 children living in 3,800 households in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East will be affected by cuts to tax credits alone.

Stuart McDonald commented:
“These proposals from the UK Government and from Chancellor George Osborne are a direct attack on those who can least afford to lose vital income. Cuts to tax credits and also to benefits for people with disabilities will push thousands more people further into poverty.

“The changes to tax credits on their own will see thousands of people in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East losing substantial amounts of money. Estimates from charities say that as many as 6,700 children could be adversely affected in my constituency alone by this bill.

“Many families rely on tax credits as a crucial part of their weekly budget, including lots who are in employment, and I am disappointed that the Tories are once more expecting these hard pressed families to bear the brunt of their austerity agenda.”
