Very pleased to see this new Scottish Government action plan to tackle maternity discrimination. Last year a UK-wide report by the EHRC found 54,000 women may be forced out of their jobs each year due to pregnancy and maternity discrimination.
The action plan includes establishment of a working group to put in place new rules for employers on recruitment, retention and development of pregnant workers. Back in November I led a Westminster Hall debate on these concerns. You can see some of the background to that debate (http://researchbriefings.parliament.uk/…/Summ…/CDP-2015-0089) and read the debate speeches (http://www.publications.parliament.uk/…/hal…/151103h0002.htm – from 4.40pm) on the House of Commons website. I’ll continue to support campaigners in their efforts to get the UK government to start using its powers to tackle this problem too.
