Stuart McDonald MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East is urging local residents to know their rights when it comes to their pay packet.
From 1 April 2016, a new minimum rate of pay comes into force across the UK. All workers aged 25 and over, who are not in the first year of an apprenticeship, will be legally entitled to the minimum pay rate of £7.20 per hour.
The UK Government is presenting this as a ‘living wage’, but it is in fact an increase to the National Minimum Wage.
Mr McDonald is urging local residents to be aware of this entitlement, but has also criticised the UK Government’s approach to the issue of fair pay.
Commenting Mr McDonald said,
“I welcome the increase in the National Minimum Wage, but it is disingenuous of the UK Government to present this as the introduction of a ‘living wage’. Not only does this policy discriminate against under 25s, this arbitrary rate is below the current agreed Living Wage of £7.85 per hour.
“The approach of the Scottish Government to the issue of fair pay is also in stark contrast to that of the UK Government. The Scottish Government is working hard to increase the number of employers paying the real Living Wage, which reflects the cost of living and has been calculated by independent advisers. Scotland now has 460 organisations that have committed to paying the real Living Wage, and the Scottish Government is determined to make even more progress and ensure that every worker in Scotland receives fair pay.”
