Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East MP, Stuart McDonald, has welcomed correspondence he has received from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) regarding the closure of Drumgrew Bridge between Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch.
The bus service on this route from Kirkintilloch to Monklands Hospital via Cumbernauld was going to operate a curtailed service from Cumbernauld to Monklands Hospital and miss out Kirkintilloch completely while Drumgrew Bridge is closed for maintenance over the next 9 months.
SPT have confirmed, however, that they are currently trying to broker a deal with North Lanarkshire Council, East Dunbartonshire Council and Network Rail to fund a replacement bus service between Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch. In the interim they hope to put in place a temporary contract until the longer term funding is sorted out.
Stuart McDonald MP commented:
“I was pleased to receive confirmation from SPT that they are working hard to ensure that those who rely on public transport to get between Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch, particularly those who use this service to get to work, won’t be left stranded and that an interim bus service is likely to be put in place.
“As far as I understand it North Lanarkshire Council have already agreed to fund a share of the cost of a replacement bus service if East Dunbartonshire and Network Rail are able to do the same. I would encourage both those organisations to work collaboratively to help share this cost and to ensure that this well utilised service continues to be provided for travellers in the area who rely on it.”
