Lots of constituents have been in touch regarding Rupert Murdoch’s Sky bid and I share many of the concerns that people have raised with me.
This bid from 21st Century Fox would place huge swathes of the UK media in the control of a single family and there are serious concerns about the conduct of James Murdoch after his management of News International and involvement in the phone hacking scandal. I wrote to Karen Bradley MP, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, to request that she refers the bid to Ofcom for investigation and that they also examine whether the Murdoch family are ‘fit and proper’ owners of a broadcast license. I’m pleased that she has today announced her decision to intervene in the proposed merger and refer the bid to Ofcom. It’s vitally important that a merger of this scale is properly and robustly scrutinised. I will continue to monitor the process of this investigation over the next few weeks and provide a further update when a final decision is announced. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/mar/16/rupert-murdoch-sky-bid-uk-ofcom
