Save Our Community Cashpoints

With over 500 ATMs closing across the UK every month I am backing the Which? campaign to save Cumbernauld. Kilsyth & Kirkintilloch East's cashpoints. LINK - which runs the UK’s largest cash machine network – has cut the amount that banks pay operators for withdrawals, making some machines no longer financially viable to run.

Our community cannot afford to lose its cashpoints, which local businesses and people rely on. These machines are vital to the local economy and important to peoples' daily lives - from buying groceries to paying bills - access to cash is essential.

Yesterday, LINK announced that it will cancel the third reduction, due in January 2020, and put on hold the fourth reduction, due in January 2021, pending a further review next year. This is, indeed, a welcome decision, but it should have been subject to proper scrutiny before the first round of cuts. The regulator must intervene and conduct an urgent review before more communities are left without free access to cash withdrawals.
