It’s Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Week, so I tabled a health question on mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid. The UK government finally made a welcome announcement today that they are launching a public consultation on this move, which has been proven to reduce the chance of pregnancy affected by neural tube defects (NTDs) such as Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. The minister’s answer here suggests it’s a question of how rather than if.
Well done to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland and all campaigners who have been instrumental in achieving what will hopefully be the first step in the UK-wide mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid. No rest until the job is completed, however!
