Constituency MP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East Stuart McDonald and local MSP Jamie Hepburn have welcomed the announcement that the Scottish Government will be funding a new build Cumbernauld Academy.
The new school building is one of a total of 19 new schools which will be built across Scotland by March 2020, impacting more than 6500 pupils, first minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.
The £230 million investment is part of the final phase of the £1.8 billion ‘Schools for the Future’ programme, funded by the Scottish Government and local councils, taking the overall number of schools being delivered to 112.
The Scottish Government is also currently funding the construction of the new Greenfaulds High School building, work on which started in January 2015. The first phase of that project is planned for completion in September 2016.
Welcoming the announcement Mr McDonald said:
“Since the Scottish Government embarked on its Schools for the Future programme it has created an estimated 11,000 construction jobs and 230 apprenticeships. As well as creating improved educational facilities this programme also boosts the jobs market and the economy.
“This ambitious plan is securing improvements throughout the country and I am delighted that, alongside the on going works at Greenfaulds High, that a new build Cumbernauld Academy has been included as part of this programme.”
Mr Hepburn added:
“This is fantastic news for all at Cumbernauld Academy and I am delighted that the Scottish Government has included it in their historic Schools for the Future programme.
“Originally, the Scottish Government had planned to build or refurbish 55 schools across Scotland, and the schools included in today’s announcement take the total to 112 – more than double that original target.
“The Scottish Government is commitment to improving educational standards for ever child in Scotland and creating new, modern buildings that will benefit the whole community are a key part of that.
“That is what the work on the new Greenfaulds High School will secure and I am delighted that Cumbernauld Academy too will benefit from Scottish Government funding.
“Today the Scottish Government has reaffirmed that commitment and I look forward to seeing the work beginning on this project.”
