Jamie Hepburn MSP and Stuart McDonald MP have welcomed the news today that Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have agreed to provided additional bus services in Cumbernauld in order to fill the gap that will be created by the withdrawal of some First Bus services in the town. Both Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald had contacted SPT and made representations on behalf of many constituents who had contacted them highly concerned how the First Bus service withdrawal would affect them.
SPT have responded to the withdrawal of the X5 bus service by creating a new subsidised service 343A which will provide Monday to Friday early morning journeys between Condorrat, Seafar and Cumbernauld Town Centre. SPT has also amended the timetable and route of service 147 to operate a Monday to Saturday late evening journey, and an hourly, Sunday evening service via Condorrat as service 147A.
Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald have been informed that strengthened Stagecoach services 25A, X25 and X28 will largely compensate for the cancellation of the X5 service and the new and amended SPT services will ensure that Monday to Friday early morning, Monday to Saturday late evening and Sunday evening gap in bus service provision within Condorrat, created by the absence of the X5 service, is filled.
Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald were also pleased to learn that SPT are introducing measures to mitigate the affects of the changes to the First Bus X3 service that will be completely withdrawn from the Seafar area. SPT have stated that the Stagecoach service X28 will provide an all-day Monday to Saturday and Sunday daytime service between Glasgow, Condorrat, Cumbernauld Town Centre and Seafar.
The X3 withdrawal results in a Monday to Friday early morning, Monday to Saturday late evening and Sunday evening gap in bus service provision within Seafar. In order to rectify this Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald have been informed that the new 343A service subsidised by SPT will provide Monday to Friday early morning journeys between Condorrat, Seafar and Cumbernauld Town Centre. SPT have also amended the timetable and route of service 403 to operate a Monday to Saturday late evening journey, and an hourly Sunday evening service via Seafar as service 403A/B.
Both Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald are committed to continuing to raise concerns on behalf of constituents affected by changes to local bus services.
Commenting, Mr Hepburn said:
“I very much welcome the news from SPT that they have created additional bus services in Cumbernauld and amended existing services in order that the people of Cumbernauld are not adversely affected the withdrawal of the First Bus services.
“I am aware that changes to local transport provision can at times be confusing, unclear or inconvenient for those regularly using the services. I hope that this latest news should help to reassure any concerned individuals who have contacted my office and across the town, that thanks to the new services introduced by SPT they will not be stranded at inconvenient times.”
Mr McDonald added:
“It appears that in this instance SPT have listened to the concerns of local people, and their efforts combined with the enhancement of Stage Coaches services, should ensure that those who regularly utilised the X5 and X3 services will be able to continue with their regular journeys.
“I am pleased that SPT have stepped-up and I hope that many of those who have been in touch regarding the withdrawal of the First Bus services will also be pleased that local residents will not be left out and regular services provided by alternative operators.
Both Jamie Hepburn and I will continue to raise concerns on behalf of constituents affected by changes to bus timetabling”.
