Universal Credit's Single Monthly Payment Perpetuates Economic Abuse of Women

The disastrous impact of Tory social security changes becomes more and more apparent every week. Both North Lanarkshire Council and East Dunbartonshire Council have released reports for committees highlighting massive increases in rent arrears because of the introduction of Universal Credit, particularly in temporary accomodation. As it rolls out, more and more people are forced to turn to food and clothing banks for help.

The roll out of UC must be stopped before all these issues repeat themselves in other local authorities.

Last week in the Home Affairs Select Committee, the danger of Universal Credit's single monthly payment in perpetuating economic abuse of women was spoken about by Dr Nicola Sharp-Jeffs, Founder and Director of Surviving Economic Abuse. Universal Credit as designed by the UK government means a household payments is made to one individual - with potentially terrible implications where there is an abusive relationship.
