World Refugee Day

20/6/2016

The protection we offer to people who have had to flee their countries because of persecution should be a matter of pride. And even more importantly, we should be proud of the refugees who we have offered protection to. Having fled their homes in the most awful circumstances, the courage and determination shown by so many in settling into their new home countries never ceases to amaze.

More than half of the 20 million refugees worldwide are children. And speaking of children, I think I’ve yet to see a more straight forward explanation of what the Refugee Convention is all about than this letter to the Prime Minister from a 3 year old constituent (posted originally in September after the death of Aylan Kurdi) – “please help the people who need our help. Little boys and girls have to be safe and not hurt and scared”.
